Obit — Laurie Ellis James

At her request no services are planned for Laurie Ellis James, who died March 3, 2003. She was 70.

Born Oct. 4, 1932, at Gardnerville, Nev., she was a member of the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California. She attended Stewart Indian Boarding School and graduated from Douglas High School. She had resided in Carson City, Nev., for the past 40 years. She was an avid Raiders football fan and loved watching sports. Whether baseball, basketball, tennis or boxing, she knew all the players. She loved spending time with family, friends, children and grandchildren. She was an executive secretary in the late 1960s at the University of Nevada Department of Mines, Nevada State Crime Commission and Department of Energy. She retired from working with the Nevada State Child Support Enforcement in Carson City.

She is survived by brothers, Ranger Ellis of Carson City and Lerial Ellis of Schurz, Nev.; sister, Rowena Pogue of Alpine, Calif.; half sister, Valencia “Kathy” Rakow of Alpine; children, Marshall Jack of Lee Vining, Calif., Sherrada James of Reno, Nev., Terance James and Jody James-Smokey of Wadsworth, Nev.; grandchildren, Stephanie Smokey, La Rei and John James of Wadsworth, Jolie Kizer of Gardnerville, Shane Jack of Victorville, Calif., Shannon Jack of Reno, Brandon and Alina Jack of Simi, Calif.; great-grandchild, Anthony McNeil of California; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

At her request no services will take place. She wanted all her friends and family to remember the good times she shared with each of them. On behalf of the family, condolences may be sent to Jody James-Smokey, P.O. Box 458, Wadsworth, NV 89442.

Arrangements are under the direction of FitzHenry’s Funeral Home, Carson City.
