Obituary: Domenic “Doc” Griffis
July 17, 2013
Domenic "Doc" Griffis of South Lake Tahoe, California passed away with his family by his side on July 13, 2013. He was preceded by his wife, Aline, as well as his son, long time Tahoe resident, Mike Griffis. He leaves behind his 3 children Domenic Griffis Jr., Colleen Monrean, and Star Poell Brooks, 9 Grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and many others who loved him. Doc was born on March 8, 1930 in Jamestown, New York. He shared a beautiful marriage with his wife of 54 years. He was a family man. He met and married his wife at a young age and cherished her until death parted them. He and Aline met at Hamburger Heaven and it was love at first sight. Even after her passing, Doc still remained devoted to his wife. A single Sunday never went by without a bouquet of flowers on her gravesite. He owned and operated Tahoe Valley Machine Works for 40 years where he specialized in spiral staircases and ornamental welding before retiring after Aline's passing. His work is still displayed throughout the Tahoe area.
Doc loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and fishing; even sitting in his backyard watching the birds and other animals made him happy. He wasn't a "drive up to the lake" fisherman; he made his own roads to the most remote lakes located in the Lake Tahoe Basin. He once walked from Blue Lakes Rd. to Red Lake in 6 feet of snow. Doc couldn't stand being idle and enjoyed work, whether it was cutting wood around the Blue Lakes area or chopping wood at the house to prepare for the long winters ahead. He enjoyed a raging hot fire to keep his family warm. Though his wife passed on 11 years prior, Domenic was not alone; he had his children and grandchildren. His loving grandson, Jonathan Poell, his wife and their three kids lived with him. Doc looked forward to Sundays, where he would prepare a big spaghetti dinner for his family. He loved to cook, sing, drink whisky and laugh. He was a strong, wise and an admirable man; most of all he loved and took care of his family and would do anything for them. Anyone who knew Doc — friend or family — loved him dearly. He was one in a billion and will be missed every day.
A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Theresa's Catholic Church on Friday July 19, 2013 at 3:00 P.M.
