OBITUARY: Alan Gregory Tolhurst

Alan was raised in San Jose and Sunnyvale, California. He graduated from Homestead High School, Cupertino, California, class of 1968. He studied at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he graduated in Environmental Design in 1974. He earned a graduate degree from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (Sci-Arc) in 1982. Alan worked with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley from 1985-88, and for the City of San Jose from 1988 until 1991. He moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1992, where he opened his own practice as Alan G. Tolhurst Architect in 1996.
Alan was an outdoor enthusiast and he was always searching for meaning. He spent much of his younger years hiking and rock climbing in the Sierras and traveling around the world. Then, he focused his energy on his daughter, his practice and his community. He served on the El Dorado County Planning Commission and on the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Advisory Planning Commission for many years.
Alan passed away on July 8th of this year. He is survived by his daughter Zyena, his wife Brigitte, his mother Barbara, his sister Diane, his brother Hank, his aunt Fay, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Alan’s life will take place Sunday, September 9th, at noon, at the Valhalla Grand Hall.
