OBITUARY: Gertrude (Gert) Matilda Weibel

Gertrude (Gert) Matilda Weibel, peacefully passed away on November 2, 2012, in South Tahoe at the Barton Skilled Nursing Facility at the age of 86. She was born in Estherville, Iowa in 1926 and moved to Southern California after graduating high school. She met and married Clarence (Jack) Weibel in 1946 and had 3 children. They moved to So. Lake Tahoe in 1963. She began working for Drs. Smith & Whitely shortly after arriving in Tahoe and worked for Dr. Dalzell and Dr. Irving during the 1970’s. She began working for Dr. Bruce Daugherty when he opened his practice in 1982 until she retired in 1996. They remained close friends until the end. She instilled the love of the medical field in her daughter, granddaughter and grandson. She was an active member of the Nevada Association of Medical Assistants, forming lifelong friendships with other medical assistants in the area. She moved to Maui, Hawaii, in 2003 to live with her daughter Barbara, where she loved watching the whales and the ocean. She returned to Tahoe in 2005. She loved being outdoors and spent many summers camping with her family in the Sierras. She enjoyed working with wood and making unique gifts. She fiercely loved her family and was a great example of unconditional love, loyalty, compassion and grace. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Gail Weibel of So. Lake Tahoe, daughter and son-in-law, Jacqueline and Jim Howard of Reno, daughter Barbara Pankey of Maui, Hawaii; her grandchildren Sami Miller of So. Lake Tahoe, Steven Howard of Burlington, Washington, Ryan Weibel of Reno, David and Adam Gerhardt of Maui, Hawaii; great grandchildren RJ Rivera, Timothy Howard, Katherine Howard, Mackenzie Pilky, James Howard and Ananiah Gerhardt; her sister Mary Ross of Texas, brother Eldon Keeler of Iowa and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held in So. Lake Tahoe and Maui during the spring. The family would like to thank the nurses and caregivers at Barton SNF for the excellent care and compassion given to Gert and her family.
