OBITUARY: William "Bill" Kaarboe Kolstad, Sr.

December 30, 1920 – October 11, 2012

With 2 of his 3 grandchildren at his side, “Bill Sr.” passed away peacefully at his home in Cave Rock, Nevada.

Born in Cooperstown, North Dakota, to Norwegian immigrants, Hans Jorgan Kolstad and Sina Kaarboe Kolstad, Bill Kolstad attained the rank of American Eagle Scout, and graduated high school in Warren, Minnesota. He attended the University of North Dakota, moving to Southern California, working for Lockheed Aircraft during World War II.



His insurance career began as a field agent traveling California for the Great American

Insurance Company. After marriage to Marjorie Ann Smith he settled in Fresno where they raised their two sons Robert and Bill Jr. Bill joined the Sherman D. Andrews independent insurance agency (started in 1919) which continues to this day as A to Z Insurance, Inc. in Fresno and Lake Tahoe.



Bill took up flying at age 65, flying his Cessna 182 Turbo until almost 90! Bill moved to Lake Tahoe, and took over the Fesler Insurance Agency in 1980. Bill was a member of Kiwanis in Fresno, and joined South Lake Tahoe Rotary Club when he moved to Tahoe.

Bill Kolstad, Sr. is survived by Robert and Martha Kolstad of Fresno, granddaughter, Elizabeth Kolstad of Fresno and Bill and Shelby Kolstad of Lake Tahoe, and grandsons Tyler Kolstad of Reno and Derek Kolstad presently in Cambridge, England.

Bill Sr. was vibrant, and active to within a month of his death. He was predeceased by his sister, Hazel Finnegan, and his wife, Marnie. His remains are to be placed next to those of his wife of over 50 years near their Fresno home. In keeping with his wishes, no funeral services are planned.
