Oil painters to appear before Tahoe Art League
August 2, 2005
The Tahoe Art League is looking forward to Wednesday’s meeting when members will welcome Gary and Kathwren Jenkins as speakers and demonstrators.
Gary and Kathwren are both oil painters, who hosted the PBS television series, “The Jenkins Art Studio,” during the 1980s and 1990s.
Gary Jenkins, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., attended the four-year Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Fla. Upon graduation he worked as a keyline artist for a large greeting card company. He also worked for the well-known art store chain, Aaron Bros. In the 1970s Jenkins started teaching and painting for galleries, which he plans to continue for some time.
Gary and Kathwren live in Carson City. Since marrying in 1980 the Jenkins have worked as a team. Gary says his wife is the “left brain” of their team. Kathwren has written 16 “How to Paint” books and has produced several instructional videos. However, she is not lacking in “right brain” talents and is an accomplished artist. Occasionally, they even collaborate on canvases. They both have a passion for painting flowers and exotic birds as well as other subjects.
North Light Books bestowed on Gary the prestigious title of one of “The Best Floral Painters in America.” Gary still travels throughout the country giving classes and seminars, with Kathwren joining him in the Western states. They also teach in this area at their home studio, St. Mary’s Art Center in Virginia City, and several other nearby locations.
When Art League members visited the Chablis Gallery in Placerville they were pleased to see examples of some of Gary’s tropical fish, one of his “new favorite” painting subjects.
