I am writing this letter in response to the Sierra Sun’s article entitled, “Tahoe Forest Board conducting conflict of interest investigation,” from the July 30, 2014, edition.
Karen Sessler, a TFHD board member is quoted as saying, “The board takes its oversight duties very seriously and is currently conducting an inquiry” into reports CEO Bob Schapper is linked to his wife’s medical company that was contracted with the hospital.
In the same article, Roger Kahn, also a board member, therefore presumably involved in the inquiry, is quoted saying, Mr. Schapper “took no actions that would influence the scope of (Marsha’s) work, or influence the amount of compensation she received from the district.”
He further asserts that Mr. Schapper was not involved in negotiating or approving the contract and did not influence “in any way” the decision to enter the contract.
Seriously? Is the inquiry concluded and Mr. Kahn is presenting the board findings? If not, then how can the board conduct a fair and impartial inquiry when a board member is already presenting conclusions that indicate otherwise?
The Nevada County District Attorney needs to conduct the inquiry since there would be no direct ties to the hospital. I believe in fair and impartial investigations into misconduct so that the public can be reassured that conclusions are accurate.
