Letter: ‘On board’ for a big winter
My wonderful wife tells me she’s never seen the squirrels of Tahoe chew off so many pine cones so early. Bears are digging deeper into their trash reserves and Hawaiian tropical waters are two degrees above bathtub temperatures. These factors can only mean one thing: Godzilla El Niño is almost upon us.
I don’t have to draw up a Venn diagram to prove that we haven’t had much snow in the past few winters here in Tahoe, right? Nevertheless, every year the State of California insists on an official measurement of how much snow we’re not getting. It’s like when the football refs request the chain guys to come out for a measurement when 20 million people watching from home know damn well it’s not a first down.
I feel sorry for that guy from the Department of Water Resources who comes up here with his scientific snow-measuring pole. He’s followed around by newspapermen, network television crews, CNN, and Jerry Brown walking around in a tweed jacket with his hands in his pockets. After four hours of setting up his equipment on a dry patch of land all he’s got to say is, “Nope — there’s no snow up here.” He could have saved taxpayers a lot of money calling in sick that day.
I’m not sure what a fictional lizard monster from Japan has to do with a big winter in Tahoe, but I’m on board. Not only are my chips “all in” for a big winter, I’m already a half-can of starting fluid away from having my snowblower in full operation. I want the guy from the Department of Water Resources to come up in April and say, “We’re gonna need a bigger pole.”
