Letter to the Editor: Let them eat cake

In his letter last week, Mr. Eagan criticizes Frank Wright because Frank complains about IVGID Rec Fee increases. I call it the Marie Antoinette syndrome, a common ailment here in Incline Village.

It reminds me of the IVGID Board meeting where chairman Mr. Simonian remarked that he knows people who run bar tabs that are greater than the Rec Fee.

For many of us, the more than doubling of our Rec Fee in a decade is no big deal, but for a good number of local families, $830 per year to subsidize our country club-style amenities that they can’t afford to use is totally unjustifiable.

No, Mr. Eagan, the Rec Center is not our country club, but the Champ Course certainly resembles one. It’s supposed to be for public recreation for the residents of Incline Village and Crystal Bay, but in reality is a tourist attraction.

According to IVGID policy, the tiniest studio apartment is assessed the same subsidy (fee) as the most opulent lakefront estate. How many residents of the Incline Apartments do you suppose can afford the regular resident green fees at the Champ course? But wait, you say, they can play for a paltry $1.50 a hole after 4 p..m. (if they walk)? Like I said, let them eat cake.
