Letter to the Editor: Open letter to Tahoe Supervisor Jennifer Montgomery

Congratulations on your latest missed opportunity to fuel the economic wellbeing of Placer County, in particular North Lake Tahoe.

The awarding of a $21.3 million construction project of the renewal of the highway and sidewalks in the downtown Kings Beach area has been given to a firm in Sparks, Nevada. Not even a California company!

In addition to the project itself, the $2.4 million management contract for the project has been awarded to Colorado based CH2M Hill, Inc.

Tell me, Madam Supervisor, just why is it that out-of-state businesses are being supported over our local worker base? Is this a proper way to spend local tax dollars? This is yet another in a line of misplaced “revenue bleeding” to out-of-area businesses. Other examples include, but are not limited to:

• Tahoe City Transit Center — between $4 million and $5 million contract awarded to a Sacramento-based builder that took many months (years) to complete. How much did all those delays cost the taxpayers?

• North Lake Tahoe Resort Association — revenue of over $2 million in annual TOT marketing funds now being handled by “School of Thought,” a San Francisco-based marketing firm, plus all public relations dollars contacts are awarded to “Abbi Agency powered by Boost” with offices in Las Vegas and Reno.

One wonders just who you are representing. If “lowest” bid is the driving force, may I remind you that even your own Placer County employees receive a differential if they work in the Tahoe offices.

Perhaps the same considerations should be given before awarding contracts for any Placer County Projects and TOT dollar expenditures. It really doesn’t seem justifiable to send those jobs outside the local area.
