Letter to the Editor: Paling in comparison

This letter is in response to the letter from Dominick Montelaro published in the Bonanza on Jan. 9, “North Tahoe should also ban plastic bags.”

No doubt many Incline Village residents would agree with you, Dominick, and would like to follow Truckee’s example and ban plastic bags.

However the IVGID Board of Trustees (with Joe Wolfe dissenting) are taking the opposite approach and appear to be on board with signing a 13-year contract with Waste Management, which replaces our existing contract (which does not expire until March 2017) with one which requires any excess garbage or yard waste to be in placed in large plastic garbage bags.

A residence can currently put out seven 32-gal cans per week; to replace 6 of those with plastic bags would potentially dump up to 2,714,400 bags into the environment annually — or, over 35 million bags over the 13 years of the contract. Sort of makes plastic grocery bag usage pale in comparison.
