Peer support group for mental illness meets

Tahoe Daily Tribune

NAMI-C.A.R.E., a peer support group lead by consumers for consumers, meets at 6:30 p.m. the second Thursday of each month at 2048 Dunlap Ave., No. 11, second floor. The next meeting is May 8. There is no cost to attend.

Sponsored by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of South Lake Tahoe — consumers advocating recovery through empowerment — NAMI-C.A.R.E. is a peer support group, not a therapy group.

Most mental illnesses are caused by disruption of the brain’s chemistry and neurotransmitter networks. These imbalances result in biologically-based mental health problems. Many mental health consumers are isolated by their illnesses and often live alone and try to recover alone. A powerful healing process occurs when people find they are not alone, that they have peers who understand their experiences and concerns.
