Police department shuffles responsibilities
May 23, 2003
It may not be apparent to the naked eye, but changes are occurring at South Lake Tahoe Police Department.
Already a month into the job, Police Chief Don Muren shifted several people into different positions in an attempt to brace for future retirements and create time to evaluate the current structure of the department.
Muren, who was administrative commander before his promotion, tapped Cmdr. Rich McGuffin to fill the empty slot. McGuffin, who acted as interim chief after Brad Bennett retired in October, was previously in charge of investigations and records.
Cmdr. Tom Conner was transferred from head of patrol to investigations and records. Sgt. Les Scott will act as acting commander of patrol.
Conner and Scott are expected to retire before the end of the year. Muren said the changes give him breathing room.
“I’m not looking forward to Cmdr. Conner and Sgt. Scott retiring but they have made it known they are retiring this fall,” he said. “What this has done is given me the opportunity to not test for the commander position (right away.)”
