Prescribed burns continue through weekend in the Lake Tahoe Basin
October 31, 2008
The U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed burning and fuel reduction work on 156 acres through the weekend on the west shore of Lake Tahoe, officials said today.
The main prescribed burn, which had a plume of smoke that was visible throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin, is located between Homewood and Tahoe Pines. As of Friday about 80 acres of pile and slash were burned, officials said.
“The conditions right now are ideal,” said Cheva Heck, Forest Service spokeswoman. “The smoke impact is minimal, with the wind bringing the smoke out of the basin.”
Rain and snow showers are expected throughout the weekend.
Other prescribed burns that have produced smoke in the area are near Cave Rock Estates and the Carnelian Bay area.
