Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra recently presented an On Your Way Award to three students at St. Theresa Elementary School. The award is designed to recognize students who are working very hard to improve their reading skills.

The students are Michael Valney, Hanna Alpaugh and Kassandra Chavez. Each winner was given a framed plaque and a $25 gift certificate to Neighbors Bookstore. In addition, a set of books was given to the school library in the names of the honored students.

Third-grader Michael Valney was chosen because he has worked so amazingly hard this year. His favorite book is “Aragon” and he likes to read because, “You can learn how things work.”

Fourth-grader Hanna Alpaugh was selected because she achieved grade- level success in reading. Her favorite books are “The Chronicles of Narnia” series. Hanna thinks reading is fun, “Because I get pictures in my head, like a movie.”

Fifth-grader Kassandra Chavez enjoys school and loves to participate and share with fellow classmates. Her favorite book is “Saving Shilo” and she likes to read because she learns so much from it.
