Rescuers continue search for missing camper

Search and rescue teams are out in force looking for a camper missing in Desolation Wilderness.

The camper, Nathan Sperring, entered the area by himself. According to El Dorado County Sheriff’s Lt. Tim Becker, Sperring is well prepared and is reported to be an experienced cold weather camper with guide experience in Alaska. Before he left on his camping trip, Sperring advised his girlfriend and parents where he was going and when he would be back. He specifically advised that if he was not back by Tuesday, Oct. 23, something was wrong.

As of 10:30 a.m., 59 Search and Rescue volunteers and five deputies were on the ground assisting with the search, and two helicopters from the 168th National Guard Unit out of Mather California, a helicopter from the California Highway Patrol and a helicopter from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office were searching from the air.



The search for Nathan is being conducted with personnel and equipment from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit with the assistance of: Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue, Tahoe Back Country Ski Patrol, Bay Area Mountain Rescue, Monterey Mountain Rescue, California Rescue Dog Association, Placer County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Alpine County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Amador County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, and the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue.
