Community members packed the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena Friday evening for the second annual South Shore St. Baldrick’s event to raise money for childhood cancer research.

“In this economy we appreciate everyone who volunteers to be here. It’s tremendous and it’s all for the children,” event organizer Christy Smith said Friday.

For Brian Gogue, a South Shore resident and captain with Tahoe Sport Fishing, St. Baldrick’s is a way to commemorate the memory of his cousin who battled cancer before passing away at 33 years old. It was Gogue’s first time at the event and he said he was blown away by the number of people who came out to support the cause.

“I’m amazed at all the people who came out. And I’m amazed at all the women who are out here, too,” he said.

The South Shore’s first St. Baldrick’s event last year raised more than $66,000 for cancer research and drew 168 “shavees,” according to Smith. The 2013 night was on track to match those numbers with 108 people pre-registered and another 50 or so walk-ins early on in the evening, Smith said.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s inaugural head-shaving event took place 13 years ago in Manhattan at a St. Patrick’s Day party. The group raised $104,000 for childhood cancer research that year. In 2002, the foundation raised its first million.
