November 9, 2009
LAKE TAHOE – Wintry weather should return this week to the Tahoe/Truckee area, bringing with it the potential for heavy snowfall, according to the National Weather Service.
A low pressure system coming from the gulf of Alaska should bring a cold front and “a period of moderate to heavy precipitation” between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday to the Sierra, NWS reports.
Rain and snow should reach the area Wednesday afternoon, hitting the Reno-Tahoe area Wednesday night. Several inches of snow are possible in the Sierra, with snow levels dipping to 6,000 feet.
Snow levels could dip lower on Thursday , NWS reports, bringing with it a potential second burst of precipitation which could bring snow accumulations to the Western Nevada valley floors.
Furthermore, high winds are expected Wednesday, with gusts reaching 40 to 45 mph along Highway 395 in Reno south to Mammoth Lakes, with 100 mph gusts forecast for the Sierra ridges.
