Sheriff’s office warns of scam with hurt deputies

William Ferchland

A person has tried to elicit money from people by saying donations are needed to help three El Dorado County sheriff’s deputies shot last week.

Don Atkinson, president of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Deputies Association, heard of the scam days after the three deputies were wounded in Shingle Springs gunfight on Tuesday.

Atkinson was unsure if anybody had been contacted in South Lake Tahoe. He said he wanted to issue a warning to people that the charity is fake.

“It’s really distasteful and disgusting but people do it,” Atkinson said.

The con artist contacts people saying collections are being accepted to help the deputies through Peace Officers Research Association of California.

There is no special fund for the injured deputies, Atkinson said. Donations can be made through the association, which does use some of the proceeds to help law enforcement families in crisis.

In addition, the association doesn’t solicit donations by the phone; instead it uses mail.
