Submit entry forms now for the El Dorado County Fair

Whether your peach cobbler is the best on the block, your pig the plumpest in the barn, or your web design simply “stellar,” now’s the time to submit your entry form to participate in the 2014 El Dorado County Fair.

The 2014 El Dorado County Fair, themed “Photos, Fathers & Fair,” will take place June 12-15 in Placerville, Calif. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the fair in its current location and the 155th anniversary of the first documented fair held in 1859 in Coloma. Dozens of categories offer participants the chance to showcase nearly every imaginable talent. Most competitions are open to the public. Entry form deadlines and guidelines vary. Submissions must be delivered to the fair in June; receiving dates vary with details outlined in the 2014 Entry Guide.



South Lake Tahoe residents may drop off entry forms and entries at the South Lake Tahoe Library the week of May 12 during library hours (Tuesday-Saturday). Visit eldoradoeountyfair.org for exceptions.

New competitions include Home Brewing, and a special photo competition in honor of the 150th Commemoration of the California State Parks.



All youth submissions are free with entry forms submitted by the deadline, and fees to enter most other categories are minimal with entry by the deadline. Late entries are accepted for some categories with an additional fee.

The 2014 Entry Guide contains rules, entry forms and guidelines for each competitive category and contest. Guides are available online at eldoradocountyfair.org and at the fair office. Enjoy a night out for a good cause

This year’s Soroptimists International of Tahoe Sierra’s Elegant Evening takes place 5:30-10:30 p.m. April 26 at Harrahs’ Tahoe. Tickets are $55 per person and include dinner, dancing, prizes and live and silent auctions. Live music provided by The Soul Experience, and tastings by Tahoe Blue Vodka, Crystal Basin Cellars, and Pichetti Winery.

Plus, both Harrah’s Tahoe and Harvey’s Inn and Casino are offering a discounted corporate room rate for the event at both properties so you can make your evening a full getaway treat. All proceeds from this event are used to support non-profits and projects with a focus on literacy, healthy lifestyles, the environment, women’s and girls empowerment, and education, to name just a few.

Food drive to help St. Theresa pantry

The food pantry at St. Theresa church is in need of non-perishable items to hand out to the needy in the community. ReMax Realty is collecting canned food at their locations at 2568 Lake Tahoe Blvd., and 182 Highway 50, Zephyr Cove. Donations can be dropped off anytime between 9-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday through April 25. The Re Max Truck will deliver the food directly to the Pantry on Friday, April 11 and Friday, April 25.

Suggested sustainable items: Tuna fish, peanut butter and jelly, rice, beans, cereal, canned meats, canned vegetables, canned fruits, canned soups, pasta, pasta sauce, dry pet food. Keep in mind that many recipients do not have cooking facilities.

Community Action Council seeks new member

The El Dorado Community Action Council is seeking an individual or agency to represent the interests and concerns of low-income individuals/families residing in El Dorado County, with special attention given to housing, nutrition and low-income program needs. The council is seeking to fill a vacancy within the Low-Income Sector Membership.

The purpose of the El Dorado County Community Action Council is to act in an advisory capacity to the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors and the El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency about the needs of the community on issues relating to human services for low-income residents of El Dorado County. The Council provides an avenue for collaborative participation of local government, private organizations and private citizens of the community in serving the most vulnerable populations. Community agencies that serve El Dorado County residents are encouraged to apply for membership.

Tickets on sale for Spring Ball dinner-dance

The High Sierra Swing Dance Club invites the public to its seventh-annual Spring Ball dinner-dance on April 26 at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson St., featuring a cabaret of dance styles.

The semi-formal/formal-attire evening begins with hors d’oeuvres and no-host cocktails at 5:30 p.m. and continues with dance performances at 6:30, buffet dinner at 7, open dancing 8-11 p.m. to West Coast swing, nightclub two-step, country two-step, waltz and Latin tunes. Raffle prizes of tickets to dance conventions and of services and goods from local merchants and individuals will be awarded throughout the evening.

The cost is $35. To reserve a will-call ticket, call Rika at 530-307-8937 or Idie at 775-443-8870 by April 19; no tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets are also on sale in Carson City at the Artsy Fartsy Gallery, the Purple Avocado and Yaple’s Ballroom.

Aging series addresses Alzheimer’s care

The Aging & Caregiving Series discussion on Monday will provide information on Alzheimer’s disease detection, causes and risk factors, stages of the disease, treatment, and much more.

All classes in the series are from 1-3 p.m. Mondays at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel (formerly Embassy Suites) at 4130 Lake Tahoe Blvd. To register, call El Dorado County Family Caregiver Support Program at 530-621-6151 or 800-510-2020.

The six-week series which began April 7 is designed to provide instruction and support for persons 60 years and older, or caregivers who are or are planning to care for a family member or friend age 60 or older. All classes and materials are offered free, although donations are accepted.

Future classes include: April 21 — The Benefits of being a Veteran; April 28 — Legal Services; May 5 — Burial and Cremation; May 12 — Dealing with Feelings of Loss and Understanding Grief.

The series is sponsored in-part by Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, Harrah’s/Harvey’s, Starbucks, Barton Home Health and Hospice, N. CA. Alzheimer’s Association, El Dorado County, Senior Legal and Veteran’s Services and Autumn Burial and Cremation.

Celebrate Easter on the Lake

The M.S. Dixie II is offering an Easter Brunch Cruise for the whole family. The cruise departs from Zephyr Cove Marina at 11 a.m. April 20. Enjoy Easter favorites such as apple-wood smoked ham and Belgium waffles while cruising beautiful Lake Tahoe. The brunch menu includes a carving station as well as a buffet line.

Additionally, kids ages 3-12 will be able to enjoy an Easter egg hunt during the cruise.
