Jim Grant / Tahoe Daily Tribune / Scott Gibson, store manager of Pearl Izumi, displays the new syncro Float shoe.

Pearl Izumi rolled into town in December, bringing with it specialty cycling and running clothes for Lake Tahoe outdoor enthusiasts.

Like many who cross-train in sports from season to season, Store Manager Scott Gibbons’ staff has found shoppers cross-dressing their way into lightweight cross country skiing and snowshoeing active wear for winter – which they put on in spring for cycling and running.

A Lycra paradise under track lighting, Pearl Izumi carries various designs of jackets, tights, jerseys, vests, packs, gloves, shorts, shoes and a wide assortment of socks. Some have tigers on them, while others have martini glasses. Prices vary from $17 for packs to $45 for cycling shoes.

The shop, located in the Factory Stores at the Y, represents one of nine stores in the chain – the third in California. Already, Gibbons said the corporate office has informed him the store has turned out to be the best performing new store in the chain.

“The California market is good for us,” he said.

Gibbons is convinced the Tahoe store fulfills a retail niche.
