A Legendary Run uses new track

Participants in A Legendary Run received an unexpected treat on Saturday morning. They became the first competitors to try out the new nine-lane track at South Tahoe Middle School that is still under contruction.

Although the track portion of the $3.275 million project won’t be completed until August, A Legendary Run race director Karin Holmes was given the OK to use the paved surface for the finishing kick of the 10K and 5K fundraising races.

“The races wound up being 200 meters longer, but it was worth it to run on the track,” said Holmes, who received the OK from

Steve Morales, Lake Tahoe Unified School District facilities manager, on Wednesday.

A Legendary Run has been the primary fundraiser for the new track facility and triggered a landslide of donations this year. More than $2.6 million has been raised and donations can still be made by going to ltusd.org or mailing them to Community Youth Sports Complex, 1021 Al Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe, Calif., 96150.

Ninety five participants helped raise several thousand additional dollars for the track.

Jake McCain, a 17-year-old cross country for Virginia City High School, won the 5K race in 20 minutes, 32 seconds. He was prepared for a rugged run.

“I thought it would be way tougher. I thought there would be more hills, but it was really fast course,” McCain said.

The race started at Lake Tahoe Community College and was a mix of trails and paved roads before ending at the former site of the track used in the 1968 Olympic Trials at Echo Summit.

McCain has a lofty goal in mind as he trains during the summer.

“I’m trying to train for next season. I want to get first at state,” McCain said.

Erich Baumann, who just completed his freshman year at South Tahoe High, placed third in 23:22.

Kate Lambdin, who will be a senior at STHS in the fall, was the first female to cross the finish line. Her time was 24:09 and good for fifth overall.

“It was really cool to run on the track,” Lambdin said. “It’s a great cause and something important that I’ve been involved with.

“I’m excited to have a facility and not having to worry about injury.”

Bill Raitter of Reno pulled away from STHS grad Alex Sharp to win the 10K. Raitter was timed in 36:23, while Sharp finished more than a minute ahead of his dad, Michael, in 38:11.

Jackie Taylor of Stateline finished in 41:29 to place sixth overall and capture the women’s title.
