Calvo’s goal propels WHS past Spring Creek

Staff reports

After being unable to convert several scoring chances early in the first half, the Whittell High boys’ soccer team finally broke through in the 42nd minute in beating Spring Creek 1-0 on Friday in Zephyr Cove.

Ignacio Calvo scored the Warriors’ lone goal, helping the team improve to 10-8-2 overall.

“It was a solid win for us,” said WHS coach Steve Maltase. “Spring Creek was coming off a win over Battle Mountain and it scored four goals, so it was big for our defense to shut them down.”

Whittell hosts North Tahoe in a Tahoe League match on Tuesday.

In the girls’ match, Spring Creek defeated Whittell 3-1.

The South Tahoe boys’ soccer team used a late goal to post a 2-1 Sierra League win over Douglas on Saturday at the Community Youth Sports Complex. No other details were available at press time.
