The Lake Tahoe Community College men’s and women’s soccer teams delivered an emphatic sweep against Butte College (Oroville, Calif.) in a home doubleheader Tuesday. The Coyotes men’s team beat Butte 8-0, and the LTCC women’s team rallied past the Roadrunners 4-2.

Coyotes men roll to biggest win of season

In the first game Tuesday, the LTCC men’s team remained undefeated in conference play with its most lopsided result of the season. The Coyotes routed Butte 8-0 for a third straight conference victory.

“I’ve wanted us to put together a complete performance like this since the beginning of the season,” Coyotes head coach Ben Wade said.

Lake Tahoe (8-4-2, 3-0 Golden Valley) had a 5-0 lead at halftime of its eight-goal victory. Midfielder Ali Giamattei opened the scoring in the eighth minute, and a minute later midfielder Carlos Trujeque found the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Giammattei struck again in the 22nd minute to put Lake Tahoe up 3-0, defender Josh Jirbandey scored four minutes later of an assist from forward Jerrell Cato and defender Mauricio Torrealba capped the first-half onslaught with a goal nine minutes before halftime. The Coyotes’ big first half against Butte (2-7-2, 0-2-1) was not by accident.

“I told them pregame if it wasn’t 4-0 by halftime we would put the kibosh on the speech and just sprint for 15 minutes, so it was rather satisfying,” Wade said. “They all looked at me when we scored the fourth goal.”

Lake Tahoe added three more goals after the break to roll to victory. The Coyotes beat the Roadrunners 4-1 in the teams’ first meeting Oct. 7.

Through Wednesday’s matches, Lake Tahoe was ranked 17th in the state and 11th in Northern California. The Coyotes return to action Friday at home against Feather River College (Quincy, Calif.) at 4 p.m. — the second game of a doubleheader.

LTCC women ride second-half rally

In the second match Tuesday, the Coyotes women’s team rallied past Butte for a second straight conference victory. Lake Tahoe erased a halftime deficit with four second-half goals — including a hat trick from forward Tianna Carrington — in a 4-2 win over the Roadrunners.

“Today was a good game for young players to watch,” LTCC head coach Christian DeLeon said. “The young players watching hopefully learned that resilience combined with teamwork and skill can at times overcome negative thoughts.”

Lake Tahoe (6-4-3, 2-1-1) controlled possession in the first half, but still trailed 1-0 at halftime. Butte (3-8, 2-2) opened the scoring when an unmarked player scored off a corner kick.

“The halftime speech was more about our success and opportunities — and that (goals) will come,” DeLeon said.

Carrington’s first two goals came in the opening 11 minutes of the second half. Four minutes in, she tied the match with a goal off an assist from midfielder Marisol Lizaola — and in the 56th minute she found the back of the net to put Lake Tahoe ahead 2-1.

In the 72nd minute, midfielder Brianna Carroll produced a one-touch strike to make the score 3-1. Carroll began the sequence with a power run, and took a pass from forward Brittany Hubberts before beating Butte’s goalkeeper.

Butte made it a one-goal game — but Lake Tahoe answered with a late score to ice the match. Carrington completed her hat trick in the 87th minute off an assist from midfielder Keely Martin to put the Coyotes ahead 4-2.

“After halftime there was just this good vibe of confidence and believing in each other,” DeLeon said. “We thought we would use the wind at our backs, but that never came into play with the great play of our midfielders Tess (Braun), Keely and Marisol.”

With the win, Lake Tahoe avenged a 1-0 road loss to Butte on Oct. 7. Through Wednesday’s matches, the Coyotes were ranked 19th in Northern California.

Lake Tahoe returns to action Friday at home against Feather River College (Quincy, Calif.) at 2 p.m. For Feather River, Friday’s match will be its first since the death of defender Grace Holland — the sophomore was found dead last Sunday at a cabin on Lake Almanor.
