Girls show late surge

The Vikings kicked up their intensity in the second half of a Lowry road-win this past weekend.

The girls expanded a 1-0 halftime lead to a 4-0 league win in the Buckaroos house on Saturday.

Senior Jenny Burks led the way with a hat trick. She scored the Vikings first three goals.

"She's really stepped up this week, first starting with the go-ahead goal early against Truckee to pretty much carrying us against Lowry," head coach Jeremy Evans said in an email. "She's providing a maximum work rate in a difficult position at outside midfield. It's been great to see her excel as she continues her senior year."

Burks also gave an assist to Brittany Hubberts on the fourth goal. Hubberts, also a senior, made her first appearance since offseason leg surgery.

But despite the end result and the standout moments, it was not South Tahoe's best game.

"We certainly had opportunities to expand our margin of victory, but Lowry made it difficult on us and we never looked comfortable," Evans said. "Lowry was very aggressive and played with amazing enthusiasm."

Part of the problem was probably a four-hour bus ride to Winnemucca along with an unfamiliar playing surface, but either way Evans has seen the team look stronger.

"It was one of those head-scratcher games that I was happy to win, but was not overly excited with our play or what I saw out there," Evans said. "We need to improve throughout the week and have a great of practice if we wish to have a chance at Elko, which always plays us tough."

The JV girls team won 6-0.

UP NEXT: South Tahoe, (2-0), will play in Elko (1-1) on Friday and in Spring Creek (0-1) on Saturday.
