Mann’s shutout lifts Vikings to home win

Sparks 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 — 0

South Tahoe 2 0 0 0 1 2 0 — 5

The Vikings' losses will be few and far between if they plays all their ballgame like they did Wednesday.

"If we can just do that every time I don't think anyone can stop us," starting pitcher Jordan Mann said.

The Vikings were certainly unstoppable Wednesday. Mann tossed a complete game shutout, and the boys played small ball for a 5-0 win over Sparks High School at home.

"We didn't get too many hits, but a little bunt here and a couple of stolen bases there. It only took a couple of hits and the other team made a couple errors," coach Starbuck Teevan said.

It was also Mann, who was nearly unhittable through seven innings. The sophomore right-hander struck out nine, walked one and gave up just two hits.

"Best game he's thrown all year. He kept our defense off the field and threw a phenomenal game," Teevan said. "He got three or four days of rest and I think that really helped him have a good day at practice. Then he came out lights out."

The Vikings jumped out to an early two-run lead in the first inning. Sergio Burgueno was walked and came home on an error Dominic Diana benefited from when he laced a hard-hit ball at Sparks' shortstop. Diana then stole his way to second and worked his way home to make it 2-0.

South Tahoe's infield turned a key double play in the second inning to keep Mann's pitch count down, but for the most part it was three up, three down for Mann.

The Vikings added one more in the fifth. Liam Loftis belted a leadoff single to center, and Diana followed up with a two-out RBI single to make it 3-0.

Loftis' bat stayed hot in the sixth. With two out and a runner on third, Loftis slapped in a run off the first strike he saw. Kolby Eymann added one more when he came home on a past ball to make it 5-0.

"The guys are really starting to pull together," Teevan said.

UP NEXT: South Tahoe (7-6-1, 5-1) will host a doubleheader against Incline (6-6-1, 0-2) on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at South Tahoe Middle School.
