South Tahoe JV baseball sweeps Fallon in league debut

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The South Tahoe junior varsity baseball team started Div. I-A Northern League play on a winning note. The Vikings swept Fallon in a doubleheader at Todd Fields Park on Saturday, March 19, led by complete game outings from starters Joe Kaufman and Ricardo Aguila.

South Tahoe (4-2, 2-0 I-A Northern) opened the doubleheader with a 10-6 victory. The Vikings built a seven-run lead in the first three innings, and closed out a Greenwave rally with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Freshman Aaron Johnson and sophomore Bryin Schouten led South Tahoe with three hits apiece in its league debut. Aaron Johnson went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs while Schouten finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs.



Sophomore Peyton Galli (three RBIs, run), freshman Cameron Johnson (run, RBI) and sophomore Scott Mansfield (run) each went 2-for-4 in the first game. Kaufman threw a complete 7.0 innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.

The Vikings completed the sweep of Fallon with a 6-3 win in the second game of the twinbill. South Tahoe scored the first six runs of the game — including four in the bottom of the fifth — and held on for victory.



South Tahoe did all its scoring on three hits to deliver a second win over the Greenwave. Galli finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs, freshman Kevin Lehmann went 1-for-2 with two runs and Cameron Johnson was 1-for-3 with an RBI and run — Mansfield added two RBIs.

In the win, Aguila produced the Vikings’ second straight complete game. The freshman threw 7.0 innings, allowing three runs on 14 hits while striking out two.

South Tahoe opened its season by splitting four games in the Mike Bearman Memorial Tournament March 10-12. After two-run wins over Douglas and Damonte Ranch (Reno, Nev.) in the first two days of the tournament, the Vikings lost both games of a doubleheader against Spanish Springs (Sparks, Nev.) and Carson (Carson City, Nev.) on March 12.
