Weekend sports impacted by air quality

The smoky skies seem to be clearing up, but many of the Tahoe weekend sporting events were still canceled or moved due to the poor air quality.

The Heavenly Mountain Run: The Sunday run was canceled, but the Heavenly Sports Labor Day Tent Sale and the Kiwanis carnival in the Cal parking lot are still scheduled for this weekend.

Kirkwood's 33rd annual 5K/10K Adventure Trail Run: The race is a go for Saturday morning. The air quality at the ski resort was much better on Thursday, and race officials expect even more smoke to clear out by the time of the event.

South Tahoe football: South Tahoe's non-league home opener was moved to El Dorado High School on Friday. The Vikings will play their first home game at 7 p.m. the following Friday, Sept. 6, against Fernley.

Whittell football: Whittell's non-league home game against Silver Stage on Friday was canceled. The Warriors will play their first home game against North Tahoe at 7 p.m. the following Friday, Sept. 6.

The racing will start with a half-mile and one-mile run for the younger racers at 9 a.m. The 5K and 10K will take off following the youth fun run. This is not a course to set a personal record, but the view can't be beat.

The 5K runners will loop through the neighborhood on a paved road and cross a meadow with a short section of trail. The 10K runners will follow Red Cliffs bike trail up the mountain behind the main Lodge, cross under Chair 2 and wind your way down the mountain on dirt roads and single track trails. The half-mile and one-mile Kids Fun Runs will be on paved road.

Race registration forms are available online at http://www.tahoemtnmilers.org or http://www.race360.com. Race-day registration opens at 8 a.m. in the Kirkwood Main Lodge and is $40, and comes with a chance to win a ski pass. The children's run costs $10 and does not include a shirt or chance to win the ski pass.
