Whittell football hosts Mineral with playoffs in balance

The Whittell Warriors football team can put itself in good position for postseason play with a victory Friday night over the Mineral County Serpents.

The undefeated Warriors (6-0, 4-0 1A Northern West 8-Man League) will host the one-loss Serpents (5-1, 3-1 1A Northern West) with the winner grabbing the inside track for one of two playoff berths the league receives.

And look for lots of offense on the turf at South Tahoe Middle School. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Mineral has scored 213 points in four league games, but has also surrendered 155. The Serpents are outscoring their conference opponents 53-39 per game. They scored 72 against Smith Valley, 59 against Sierra Lutheran, 54 vs. Pyramid Lake and 28 in a loss to Virginia City, where they gave up 88.

“They are a wide open team on offense with multiple sets and a lot of talent,” said Warriors head coach Phillip Bryant. “They can score quick with their offense and they score often. They don’t try to overpower opponents they just go into games with the idea that they can outscore you. They never take their foot off the pedal regardless of the score. Defensively, they give up a lot of points but that doesn’t seem to bother them because of their offensive philosophy.”

The Warriors are beating their league opponents by an average score of 56-10 and the three-headed offensive monster of Isaiah Womack, Corey Huber and Dalton Warswick has not yet been stopped, or even slowed somewhat.

The trio is putting up video game numbers.

Womack, the Warriors’ quarterback, has thrown for 608 yards and nine touchdowns completing 73 percent of his passes. He has also rushed for 859 yards and 11 TDs on 41 attempts.

Huber, a four-year varsity starter, has carried the ball 40 times for 575 yards and 14 scores and has also caught eight passes for 160 yards and another two TDs. He also has a combined 441 yards on punt and kickoff returns.

Warswick gains the tough inside yards and has 614 on 63 totes with nine touchdowns. He’s also caught seven passes, two for scores.

So if Mineral wants to engage in an offensive battle, Bryant isn’t too worried.

“For us, it’s the same as always,” Bryant said. “We are going to do what we do and it’s up to you to stop us. I have a great deal of confidence in our defense and I believe we will create concerns for them with the fact that we can put points up just as well, if not better. But we certainly respect them and their talent, just as we do every opponent.”
