Q&A with new Tahoe Daily Tribune sports editor

After a search process that spanned roughly three months, the Tahoe Daily Tribune has a new sports editor.

JP Kelsey officially joined the Tribune team Wednesday, March 1.

Kelsey’s media experience dates back to 2010 when he worked as a staff writer for the student news publication the Auburn Plainsman in his home state of Alabama. He served as a freelance reporter for the Cherokee County Herald in Centre, Alabama, from 2010 to 2015. During that time he covered features, local governments, sports and education.

Kelsey graduated with a masters of arts degree in 2015. In August 2016, he landed in Eureka, California, where he worked as an associate faculty instructor of communication at College of the Redwoods.

To help introduce Kelsey to the community, Tribune staff members posed the following questions.

Where are you from?

I’m from a small town in Alabama.

Why did you become a journalist?

Now that I think about it, my interest in journalism was piqued after I saw the Chevy Chase film, “Fletch.” I remember watching it when I was younger and Fletch made being a journalist look fun. Although I wouldn’t recommend picking a career that is based on a Chevy Chase comedy, I’ve always enjoyed writing and being involved with what’s going on in my community; being a journalist allows me to do both.

What do you do for fun?

I’m usually playing a musical instrument or exploring the wilderness when I have time. I’m always game for a road trip or concert, too.

Is there anything about living in Tahoe that excited you?

I’ve been fascinated with the Sierra Nevada mountain range for quite a while.

If you could be a professional athlete, what sport would you pick?

I would go with basketball since I’ve never been that great at it. I guess that would kind of make me a fantasy athlete.

If you could have lunch with anyone, living or dead, who would you choose?

Having lunch with Nikola Tesla would be very interesting. A mind like that doesn’t come along too often. He was very much ahead of his time.

What’s the coolest place you’ve ever traveled to?

Well, interestingly enough, it’s a place not far from South Lake Tahoe. A few years ago I did some volunteer work in North San Juan and I loved the area. It’s hard to beat the Yuba River in summer.

What’s the worst movie you’ve ever seen/why?

There’s this movie called “Troll 2” that has reached cult status as “the best worst movie.” There’s even a documentary that chronicles how such a bad movie was filmed and released.

Best concert you’ve ever been to?

That would have to be the 2013 Hangout Fest. Hangout, as it’s known informally, is an annual music festival that is held in my home state of Alabama. I went mostly to see Kings of Leon and they did not disappoint.
