South Reno tops South Tahoe in state tournament

The South Tahoe Babe Ruth All-Stars fell to South Reno 12-11 in extra innings of a back-and-fourth championship game during the state tournament Monday.
The Vikings won the first game 6-5 after scoring four runs in the seventh inning of the double-elimination tournament to force an "if" game immediately following.
In the fourth inning, Lex Merrifield hit an RBI groundout scoring Josh Sullivan to tie the score at four. South Reno took a one run lead in the bottom of the inning, but Dakota Sullivan drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to score Garret Harley evening the game at five.
South Reno was winning 10-7 when Payton Galli led off the seventh inning with a single and advanced to second and third on stolen bases. The next batter, Stacey, hit a standup double to centerfield scoring Galli. Sullivan, representing the tying run, drew a walk.
After stealing third, Stacey was brought home off an RBI groundout by Brian Catchings that advanced Sullivan to third.
Sullivan came home on a passed ball to tie the game at 10.
In the bottom of the inning, South Reno threatened with runners on second and third and two outs, but Stacey caught a fly-ball in center field to force extra innings.
In the ninth, Catchings reached first on a throwing error by South Reno's defense to load the bases with one out. Devin Chartraw singled in Sullivan before the top of the inning ended on a double play with South Tahoe ahead 11-10.
South Reno tied the game on a passed ball then hit a walk off single in the ninth to win the game, and the tournament, 12-11.
Pitchers Stacey and Chaz Ross combined for the loss on the mound. Evan Brewer and Ross also recorded hits in the game.
