South Tahoe doubles team wins 3A Northern Region title

South Tahoe's Abby Burns and Gabbi Fisher were the last team standing in the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association 3A Northern Region Tennis Championships Friday, Oct. 13, and Saturday, Oct. 14, at Tahoe Donner Association in Truckee.

The duo won one match Friday and then brought home the 3A Northern region title with two victories on Saturday.

They will be joined at the state tournament on Oct. 19-21 in Las Vegas by the Vikings boys top player Mickey Sullivan.

Burns and Fisher entered the tournament as the No. 1-ranked team having lost just one set out of 30 this season. The seniors are best friends and have played together since their freshmen year.

"They communicate well, strategically figure out their opponents, and support each other positively," said Vikings head coach Suzy Allione.

Burns and Fisher received a bye in their first match and first played in the quarterfinals of the 13-team bracket.

Their first match against Incline's Millie Jenkins and Lily Price went to a first set tiebreaker where they prevailed and won the match 7-6(4) and 6-3.

The next day, neither match was close. They pounded the No. 5 seed from Truckee 6-4, 6-0 then won the title match over a team from Fallon 6-1, 6-2.

Sophomore Kayla Mason was the Vikings top-ranked singles player and made her way to the third-place game, but fell 6-3, 6-3 in her bid to qualify for state.

"All these girls consistently earned verbalized respect from their competitors with their kindness, honesty,and positive attitude on the court," Allione said. "This is what Gina (Tarwater, assistant coach,) and I are most proud of and why these girls have experienced the success they have this year. Basically, they're having fun enjoying the game of tennis."

Sullivan cruised through his first two matches Friday in the 16-player bracket surrendering just seven games while winning 24.

On Saturday morning, Sullivan suffered a tough loss in the semifinals to Incline's Lucas Tong 7-5, 7-5. He finished the tournament with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Incline's Dalton Fry to finish third and qualify for state.

The No. 3 ranked doubles team of Quinn Proctor and Pete Sullivan fell just short in their state bid, falling 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in the third-place match.
