STHS girls’ track team gears up for spring

Chad Sellmer, Tribune staff writer

The South Tahoe High School girls’ track team is ready for another year of tough 4A league competition, coming off a strong finish at the state meet last year by runner Karen Dalmacio.

STHS coach Melissa Berry, in her second year with the team, noted that Dalmacio, a senior, is looking to defend and improve upon last year’s fifth-place finish at the state meet in the 400-meter dash. The team competes in the Nevada 4A Sierra Division with some big-time programs, including Reno, Carson, Galena and Hug.

Dalmacio also runs the 100, 200 and 4×100 relay team. Last year, she qualified for the state meet in the 100, 200 and 400.

“We expect her to make state in all her events this year,” Berry said.

The girls’ track team is coached by both Berry and Dan Wilvers. The two coaches share duties for boys and girls at the high school. Berry is dealing with sprints, throws and jumps, while Wilvers coaches distance running, from the 400 up to two miles.

“We have such a small team that we don’t even count (the team finish),” Berry said. “Even though we are a team, track is an individual sport so everyone takes their own piece. We don’t worry so much about the team, just individuals.”

Berry, who also teaches psychology at the high school, will enjoy six returning varsity girls to this year’s team, including senior Jackie Marshall, who runs the 200, 400, long jump and relays, and senior Cindy Davis, who was injured last year but will return to compete in the triple jump.

Last year’s girls’ relay team made it to regionals but failed to qualify for state.

“We didn’t make it because of a false start and you don’t get anymore chances to do it over again,” Berry said. “We were the second-place team at regionals. All we had to do was run around the track (to advance to state). We’re hoping to improve on that.”

Berry is excited to welcome some new faces to the team this year.

“We do have people running for the very first time and they’re not all freshmen,” she said.

“I think we have a really good team this year,” Dalmacio said. “With this much talent, I think we’ll have a fun year.”

As for individual goals, Dalmacio is fired up to outdo her performance at state last year.

“I plan to go to state again, hopefully in all four events, but even one would be awesome,” she said.
