STMS boys cross country wins 7th grade race at Tah-Neva Championships

Tribune staff report

The sun was shining bright Friday, Oct. 17 when more than 300 middle school runners representing 16 schools converged at Kahle Park to compete in the Tah-Neva League Cross Country Championship. Earlier fall rains made the course that loops through the meadow and forest area north of the park ideal for running — the course for the seventh graders was 2.13 miles long, while the eighth graders covered 2.63 miles.

The seventh grade girls were first on the course, and Izzy Terrazas from Alder Creek won by covering the distance in 14:45, just two seconds ahead of second-place finisher Carissa Buchholz from South Tahoe (14:47). Hana Mazur (15:23) of Alder Creek, Hannah Trew (15:30) from South Tahoe and Carly Davis (15:35) from Alder Creek rounded out the top five.

Alder Creek finished first in the team division with a score of 26 points, followed by South Tahoe (34). Nina Seeman (16:25), Jerra McLaughlin (16:40), Halie Franklen (17:08), Briyona Ziegler (17:25) and Eliana Carney (17:26) rounded out the Timberwolves' top seven.

Next out of the gate were the seventh grade boys. Timberwolves' runner Josh Bull battled all the way to the finish line and claimed first place with a time of 14:25, just one second ahead of Alder Creek's Ethan Flynn (14:26). Third place went to Alan Tester from Alder Creek (14:47), while Oscar Marzocco (14:57) from South Tahoe grabbed fourth place and Teagan Hansen (15:03) of Bethlehem Lutheran finished fifth.

The Timberwolves captured the team title with 41 points, with North Tahoe (71) finishing in the second spot. Quinn Proctor (15:33), Logan Chapman (15:34), Noah Lyle (15:44), Leyton Sweeney (15:53) and Clyde Rypins (15:58) represented South Tahoe's top seven harriers.

Next came the girls eighth-grade race. The North Tahoe Lakers dominated this race, placing five runners in the top 10 — including the first four spots. The Lakers were lead by Sofia Sanchez, who covered the 2.63-mile course in a winning time of 19:08 — she was followed by teammates Elan Lindsey (19:23), Ella Kuzyk (20:16) and Ella Carr (21:00). Alder Creek's Monique Fellows (21:06) was the fifth-place finisher.

The final event of the day was the eighth-grade boys race. Haydn Halvorsen from Sugar Bowl Academy sizzled over the course in an outstanding time of 17:53 to finish in first place. Carson's Brandon Copeland (18:18) took second place, followed by Nate Cutler (18:44), Alex Whitham (18:52) and Cole Gardner (18:56) from North Tahoe.
