Whipple wins second at Junior World Championships

South Shore freeskier Brent Whipple, of Stateline, took second in the men’s slopestyle competition at the FIS Freestyle Junior World Championships in Valmalenco, Italy last week. It was Whipple’s best finish to date.

Whipple was one of nine U.S. freestylers to come away with medals, enough to win the Marc Hodler Trophy for USA. The U.S. finished with 119 points over Russia and France, who finished with only 65 and 64 points. The Junior World Champs wrapped up the 2012-13 FIS Freestyle season.



Babe Ruth tryouts and sign ups this weekend



South Tahoe Babe Ruth Baseball is holding tryouts and sign ups for the upcoming season Sunday, April 7, at noon and again on Sunday, April 14, at 10 a.m. at the Babe Ruth Baseball Field on Rufus Allen Boulevard. Please note that the date and location has changed. Players can also sign up any time at the Best Western Station House Inn at 901 Park Ave., South Lake Tahoe. Players interested in participating this season must attend one of these tryouts. All boys and girls ages 13 through 15 are welcome to come sign up and tryout. Players must be born between May 1, 1997 and April 30, 2000 to participate. The cost is $100 per player, and opening day is May 5.

Babe Ruth is a competitive local South Shore league which focuses on continued baseball skill development, sportsmanship and team camaraderie in a fun and safe environment. Anyone interested in playing, helping coach or assist the league should try to attend one of these tryout dates.

Softball sign ups underway in South Shore

The Amateur Softball Association is holding sign ups Tuesday, April 9, and Thursday, April 11, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the South Tahoe Ice Rink. The ASA is a South Shore league for girls to play softball in before they reach high school.

Bijou Golf Course opens early

The Bijou Golf Course is now open for the season, marking the earliest opening day in its history.

The golf course will remain open subject to weather closures for the rest of the season. Current residential rates are $15 for nine holes and $12 for 9 holes at twilight.
