Whittell boys soccer blanks Dayton

Ignacio Calvo scored two goals and Trevor Fairbank added the other as the Whittell High boys’ soccer team found success outside of league play with a 3-0 nonleague victory over Dayton on Thursday in Dayton.

Cody Williams assisted on Calvo’s first goal, Fairbank assisted on his next, and then goalie Alex Potnick’s long-range kick led to Fairbank’s goal. The Warriors improved to 5-7-2 overall, including a 5-4-1 mark in non-league games.

“It is nice to get a break from the cutthroat lake division because we’ve done pretty well against the other division,” said WHS coach Steve Maltase.

Whittell plays at Yerington in a nonleague game on Saturday.

Last year, the Dayton girls’ soccer team ended Whittell’s season in the first round of the regional tournament. The Warriors were hoping for some revenge on Thursday, but they battled to a 2-2 tie against the Dust Devils in a nonleague game in Dayton.

Tierney McKool and Taylor Shepack scored the Warriors’ goals, while defenders Samantha Brumbach and Gabriella Tracy shut down Erika Garcia, Dayton’s star who scored two of her team’s goals in the Dust Devils’ 4-3 playoff win last year.

All four goals were scored in the first half.

“They are a pretty good team, and Erika Garcia is a great player,” said WHS coach Tony Cormier. “But we pretty much shut her down today, and we get to play them again at our place (Oct. 11), so hopefully we get them back from last year.”

Whittell (8-4-1) hosts Incline in a key 3A Tahoe League game on Tuesday in Zephyr Cove. The Highlanders beat the Warriors 5-0 last month.
