Whittell softball sweeps Carlin after break

CARLIN, Nev. — The Whittell softball team returned to action after a two-week layoff last Saturday — and shook off the rust with a pair of victories. The Warriors swept Carlin 16-5 and 9-4 in a doubleheader, using a big inning in each game to extend their winning streak in league play to four games.

Whittell (9-7, 6-4 IV Northern) took the first game of the doubleheader 16-5 in five innings. The Warriors scored seven runs over the first two frames and closed out the game with nine more in the top of the fourth.

After Whittell took a 7-0 lead, Carlin (0-13, 0-9) got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. The Warriors took a 16-2 lead into the fifth, and the Railroaders scored three times but ultimately fell two runs shy of avoiding the 10-run rule.

Jordyn Becker collected a team-high five RBIs in the victory, and finished 3-for-4 with a run. Kelsey Kjer led Whittell with four hits — she went 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs.

Ali Copsy also had multiple RBIs in the first game, finishing 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs. Daria Sharon was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs, Eva Fuller went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run and Lacey Robinson finished 2-for-2 with a run in the win — Kaitlyn Kjer collected a hit and an RBI, Dominique Ogilvie had a hit and four runs and Tatum Libert added a hit and a run.

In the circle, Kelsey Kjer threw all five innings and all of the five runs she allowed were unearned. The junior gave up seven hits, struck out five and walked one in the 76-pitch outing.

The Warriors completed the sweep with a win in the second game of the twinbill — but it wasn't quite as straightforward. Whittell trailed for most of the contest before scoring seven runs in the top of the six on the way to a 9-4 victory.

The Warriors opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second, but Carlin scored twice in the next half-inning to take its first lead of the doubleheader. The Railroaders held that 2-1 lead over the next three innings before Whittell eventually broke through.

An inning after breaking out, the Warriors added a run in the top of the seventh to take a 9-2 lead. Carlin scored twice in the bottom of the frame, but was unable to complete the comeback.

Ogilvie and Robinson each went 2-for-4 in the win — Ogilvie scored once and Robinson added a pair of runs. Kelsey Kjer hit a three-run triple in the second game, Kaitlyn Kjer had a two-run double and a run, Libert finished with a hit, two RBIs and a run, Sharon added an RBI and a run, Fuller had a hit and two runs while Becker finished with a hit and a run.

Kelsey Kjer pitched a second straight complete game for Whittell as it completed the sweep, allowing four runs (two earned) on nine hits. The right-hander struck out five while improving to 8-6 on the season.

The Warriors resumed league play Tuesday at Pyramid Lake. Whittell travels to Mineral County on Saturday for a doubleheader — the first game is scheduled to start at noon.
