Suspect arrested in case involving children’s photos

William Ferchland

Authorities arrested a 31-year-old South Shore man who they believe used a camera phone to take pictures of children urinating in a men’s bathroom at Horizon Casino Resort.

Jason Helton was taken into custody Friday at 10 a.m. and booked into El Dorado County Jail.

He appeared in court Monday and signed a waiver of extradition to eventually be sent to Douglas County. He is being held at no bail and will next be in court Thursday at 8 a.m. to face a charge of probation violation.

In Douglas County he will likely face charges including unlawful use of minors in pornography, said A.J. Field, an investigator with Douglas County Sheriff’s Department.

A security camera photo of the suspect and a news story detailing the incident that ran in the Tahoe Daily Tribune on June 22 and was picked by other media outlets led tipsters to the sheriff’s department, Field said.

Children who were photographed in the bathroom near Wallace Theaters were between the ages of 5 to 10 years old.

When approached by casino security for questioning, the man fled using a motor scooter with a bright yellow engine as his getaway vehicle.

Witness accounts at the time described the man as 24 years old, standing 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighing around 250 pounds.

Field said a scooter was found with an engine recently painted black. In addition, 40 homemade videos and DVDs were taken after the arrest and search warrant were issued.

The videos and DVDs have yet to be viewed for any inappropriate material, Field said.

A camera phone was also found but was missing its SIM card, a chip that contains information such as phone numbers and images, Field said.

Helton was on probation for a theft charge, Field said. He worked at the Brewery at Lake Tahoe.
