Tennis girls capture regional finals

The lady Vikings checked off step one on their road to a tennis state championships.
For the first time in school history, the South Tahoe tennis girls took first place in regionals Friday with a 12-6 win over Incline in Reno. The win ensures the girls a top seed as they enter state competition in two weeks. The boys dropped their match 14-4 to Incline, but both teams will still advance to state championships. –
The girls came out strong and emerged 5-1 at the end of the first round. During that round, No. 1 singles player Maggie Lee bested Incline’s fiercest singles competition Anne Schrage 6-3.
All three doubles teams also swept in the first round to contribute to the Vikings commanding an early lead.
The Vikings picked up three more wins in the second round and locked up the regional finals in the third round. Lissie Stewart and Ashley Tarwater, No. 3 doubles, captured the match winning point to give the lady Vikings the 10 points needed to take home the championship trophy.
As usual, No. 1 doubles team Cassandra Marin and Emily Rives delivered an impressive 3-0 performance. The dynamite duo is the only undefeated team in the 1 and 1A Northern Division. Doubles team Sarah Jobbins and Grace Bronken also contributed a 3-0 performance.

Both teams compete in individual tournaments this week.
Representing the girls in individuals is Lee in the No. 2 seed, Catherine Baghdikian in the No. 3 seed and Natalie Allen is the No. 6 seed.
In doubles play Marin and Rives are seeded No. 1, Bronken and Jobbins are seeded No. 2 and Tarwater and Stewart are in the No. 6 seed.
In the boys individual tournament this week Chad Kassamanni will compete in the No. 1 seed, Ryan Piazzo will compete from the No. 5 seed, and Zack Fiston in the No. 6 seed.
Representing South Tahoe doubles will be Kyle Swain and Colton McHugh in the No. 3 seed, Adam Jarrett and Grant Fagen in the No. 4 seed and Trevor Gaaron and Gabe Tenocelot playing from the No. 6 seed.
