An Arizona cyclist who was struck by an SUV on June 9 died at Renown Memorial Hospital June 15, the California Highway Patrol announced Tuesday.

The deceased man was identified as 70-year-old Donald Michael Irwin, who was a former judge in La Paz County, Ariz.

Irwin served on the bench from 1981 to 2001, according to the Yuma Sun newspaper.

He succumbed to his injuries after being taken off life support June 15.

Irwin was injured on June 9 when he was struck by a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Andrus Steponovicious, 35, of Venice, in the area of Jicarilla Drive and Pioneer Trail. The two men were traveling north when Steponovicious struck Irwin with his passenger-side rearview mirror, causing him to lose control of his bicycle. Irwin was ejected onto the roadway, striking his head and rolling over several times before coming to a stop. He was found unconscious when emergency personnel arrived at the scene and was later flown to Renown Memorial Hospital for care. He remained in critical condition at the hospital for several days until he succumbed to his injuries June 15.

Irwin’s brother, Jay Irwin, a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for Arizona in Yuma, told the Yuma Sun Donald Irwin was likely riding in preparation for another triathlon.

It was previously reported that drugs and alcohol were not considered a factor.
