Valhalla welcomes renowned pianist

Tahoe Tallac Association will present internationally acclaimed classical pianist Robert Thies in a pre-Valhalla Festival fund-raiser on May 16. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the Valhalla Boathouse Theater, Tahoe Tallac Site, three miles north of the “Y” on State Route 89.

Admission is $30 for adults and $15 for children 6 to 12 years of age. The cost includes pre-concert champagne and hors d’oeuvres in the boathouse courtyard, and post-concert coffee and desserts in Valhalla Grand Hall. To purchase tickets call (530) 542-4166.

The fund-raiser includes a raffle to win two season tickets to the 2003 Valhalla Arts & Music Festival, which are valid June 26 through Sept. 5. The festival includes 48 events valued at approximately $1,000. Tickets for the raffle are $10 each or $10 for three. The winner will be announced at the close of the evening.

Robert Thies holds the gold medal from the second International Prokofiev Competition in St. Petersburg. He is the first American pianist since Van Cliburn to win a first prize in a Russian piano competition. He studied at the University of Southern California under the direction of Daniel Pollack and graduated summa cum laude and was voted by the school of music as the most outstanding graduate for both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He has performed all over the world, receiving high critical acclaim for his solo and concert performances.

Thies has put together a surprise program for this special event and the boathouse audience. Additionally, Lucky Baldwin’s fully restored century-old Steinway will be on stage for his performance.
