Vikings close season with hard-fought loss

Quarterback John Cefalu and the Vikings didn’t go down without a fight Friday.The Wolverines couldn’t shut the Vikings’ offense down in the first half, but Truckee came out with a vengeance in the second to pull out a 63-28 win. The loss put an end to South Tahoe’s five-game win streak, but not its winning season. The Vikings finished the year with a 5-4 record. Truckee smashed out of the gate in the first quarter. The Wolverines snuck past Tahoe to strike first on a 63-yard punt return. They then ran the ball straight up the middle to grab a commanding 14-0 lead. South Tahoe had seen it before though, and Cefalu stayed calm. Cefalu patiently started working the ball downfield with a series of short passes spread out to the Vikings receiving staff. Cefalu then found Kyle Moreno with a four-yard touchdown pass and with it, the Vikings busted up the shutout. Chris DiGrande was good for the point after touchdown with three minutes left on the clock.The Vikings weren’t done. They slammed into Truckee on the kick return forcing a fumble and recovering on the Wolverines’ 40.Cefalu started the procedure again. A 17-yard pass to Cale Backinger here and quick handoff to Dylan Gardner there and the Vikings were within striking distance.Cefalu then cut the Wolverines lead to one with an 11-yard bullet to Kyante Wilson. The Wolverines, however, got the final word when quarterback Erik Holmer handed off to Jake Pettit, who drove up the middle to find end zone with 27 seconds left.Yes, this was all still in the first quarter.The Wolverines added two more TDs to open the second quarter, but Cefalu kept the Vikings in the game. The QB hit Brandon Cramer with 64 yards on a TD pass then found Cramer again for the two-point conversion. The game was now within two possessions and the Vikings hung onto their momentum as they stopped Truckee on its next drive. Cefalu capitalized on the turnover. He found Backinger with an 18-yard pass and the PAT brought the game within one touchdown. But the score was too close for the Wolverines, and Truckee turned up the heat on the chilly night. The Wolverines served up two more touchdowns to close out the first half.South Tahoe entered the second half trailing 49-28, and Truckee devoured the clock with runs up the middle. The Wolverines added two more in the third, eclipsing any chance of a Vikings comeback.
