The Warrior cross-country team didn’t make state, but closed out the season with new personal records posted by all the boys at regional finals Friday in Reno.

Senior Josh Welch crossed the finish line first for Whittell at 19:51, 42 seconds faster than his previous personal best.

Gabe Rusk shaved a whopping 2:23 off his time (finished 23:35). Gabe Aguilar bested his old record by 1:34 (finished 24:47). Rudy Mata shaved 1:11 off his best time (finished 24:59). Chris Evans cut off 1:31 from his personal best (finished 27:06).

On the girls side, Veronica Charles turned in a gutsy performance. On a severely sprained ankle, Charles ran the 5K regional race.

“She was determined to compete in Zone. Although she did not have her best time of the year, it was definitely the most impressive performance of the day,” cross-country coach Lindsay Wines said in an email. –

Charles came in at 29:18. Aisha Ceron clipped 4:36 off her time, finishing at 30:12, and Alexa Cooper breezed in at 30:12.

“Even though no one qualified, none of them should hang their heads. They all went into the race with one common goal – to run their best race and they did,” Wines said in an email. “Not going to state is disappointing for them, but knowing they all gave their best effort is a good feeling to have.”
