Warriors denied seventh straight championship

Staff report

It was one of the longest-running title streaks in Nevada state high school history.

The Meadows, the last team to beat Whittell at the 2A state volleyball tournament, knocked off the six-time defending champion Whittell Warriors in the finals Saturday in Las Vegas.

The Mustangs overcame a third-game collapse to defeat the Warriors 25-22, 25-19, 12-25 and 25-17 at Silverado High School.

In 2002, the Mustangs defeated the Warriors in three games in a state semifinal match.

Whittell set the all-time streak of successive state titles for the 2A classification with its sixth championship last year. Moapa Valley won five straight 2A titles (1991-95) en route to setting a state record of 14 consecutive championships between the 2A and 3A divisions.
