Both Warrior soccer teams earned a trip to state with a clean semifinal sweep in Incline on Friday.
The girls defeated Lovelock 3-0 while the boys took down Yerington 8-2. Both teams will finish regionals today with a regional championship match in Incline. No matter what the outcome, Whittell has secured a spot in state play in Henderson, Nev.
Forvilly leads ladies
Normally a defender, senior Sierra Forvilly led the girls with two goals.
We were playing in different position than we usually play, but we eventually found our grove and Kenya (Maltase) got her shot in,” Forvilly said.
Maltase served up two assists to Forvilly and knocked in a goal of her own for the Warriors.
Speedy junior Jenny Shepack also delivered a key assist and standout performance.
Skylar Smith kept the backfield clean and goalkeeper Gisselle Benitez held the shutout with four saves.
Neil nets four
Hats off and than some to Marshall Neil, who went above and beyond to net four goals in the boys semifinal win Friday.
The senior was unstoppable in the game against Yerington with one of his goals finding net from 20-plus yards out.
“Twenty minutes in we started to play as a team really well and started getting goals,” Bryce Bronken said.
Mark Waite showed an equally impressive range when he found the net from about 35 yards out.
Bronken and Palmer Chaplin also slammed in goals for the Warriors.
