Local art student Matt Kauffmann’s poster has been chosen for the 42nd annual An Evening of Food and Wine Tasting event poster.

Kauffmann’s entry, featuring a surreal blue-violet scene with a moon sliver as the bowl of a wine glass over Lake Tahoe, was one of more than a dozen that were submitted to this year’s contest. Kauffman, who will receive his BFA from Sierra Nevada College this year, received a $250 cash prize and two tickets to the event. He describes his original design as “radtastic” and says the recognition from Soroptimist is motivation to keep creating new work.

“I started a youth outreach program called The Sphere of Influence nearly five years ago that revolves around bringing more art to the streets of the south shore,” Kauffman stated in a press release. “The program allows youth to be invested in their community by painting murals and other graffiti inspired designs.”

Kauffmann serves as a mentor for homeless youth at Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

The winning poster was selected by SISLT members who knew nothing about the personal lives of the artists when they cast their votes.

“I think it is really fitting that someone who gives back so much to our community was chosen as this year’s winner,” SISLT President Pat Disney stated. “Matt Kauffmann embodies our club’s commitment to helping those in need in Tahoe and I’m sure his beautiful design will help draw attention to this year’s event.”
