Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe recently honored Nika Hsiao as the March Young Woman of the Month from Whittell High School. Whether she’s working on improvements within the confines of her school, on a larger community level, or at a global level, Nika strives to make our world a better place.

Nika has remained very active and involved all four years of high school. Her creative side has kept her playing the clarinet in pep band, concert band and advanced band; and performing with the Black and White Choir as well as in the school’s drama productions. Athletically, she has been invaluable to the varsity cross country team, contributing to their zone and state championships and serving as team manager.

Nika has strong leadership qualities. She currently is serving as the executive council’s student body secretary and is an active member of Key Club, Spanish Club, National Honor Society and is the Site Accountability Committee student representative. These committees have benefited from her involvement in projects including coat drives, canned food drives and walkathons.

Taking all of the most academically challenging classes, Nika has maintained a 3.9 GPA. She is fluent in two languages, English and Chinese, and is learning Spanish. Next year Nika will be the Rotary exchange student and will be living and studying in Argentina.

After her year of studying as an exchange student, Nika plans to attend a four-year university and pursue a study in international business.
