Zelda L. ‘Jo’ Hellman

No services are planned for Zelda L. “Jo” Hellman, 80, who passed away April 26, 2005, at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev.

Jo was born July 20, 1924, in Butler, S.D., one of 11 children of Anton and Gertrude Hassinger. She attended high school in Seguin, Texas, then earned a degree in nursing from Texas Lutheran. While serving as a nurse in the U.S. Army during World War II, Jo met and married her husband, Nathaniel. They resided in the Bay Area for many years before making Lake Tahoe their permanent home in 1962. Jo was an excellent homemaker and nurturing mother. Being an avid gardener and sun worshipper, she also lovingly tended her gardens.

She is survived by her brothers, Alan Hassinger of Minnesota, Myron Hassinger of Texas; sisters, Dorothea Umbach of Maryland and Margaret Holland of Texas; children Michael Hellman (Kathy), Jo Anne Hudson (Robert), Patricia Woody (Tom), Douglas Hellman (Anne), Kimberly Sweatt (John); and grandchildren, Cheryl, Andrew, Jeannette, Lesley, Sarah, Rachel and Hannah. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nathaniel.

In lieu of flowers, and in memory of Jo, her family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60601-7633.
