Empty Bowls fundraiser set for May in Incline Village

Sierra Nevada College will host the annual Empty Bowls fundraiser on Thursday, May 1, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the new Holman Arts and Media Center at 1008 Tahoe Blvd.

Art students and instructors from Incline Middle School, Incline High School, Lake Tahoe School and Sierra Nevada College have created ceramic bowls for this “fun-raiser.”

“Empty Bowls allows our students to engage in a charitable act while using their creative gift as a resource,” said Rick Parsons, SNC ceramics professor.

Empty Bowls is an international project to fight hunger. The basic idea for Empty Bowls is simple: Participants, local art students and their teachers have created ceramic bowls and will serve a simple meal of soup and bread.

Guests choose a bowl to use and to keep as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world.

A $10 donation includes one ceramic bowl plus soup, while $20 includes two ceramic bowls and soup for a family.

Soup for the event has been donated by Sodexo and Aaron Zendner. Truckee Sourdough Company has generously provided the bread. Proceeds from this event will benefit Project MANA, Meals on Wheels and the Deacons’ Food Closet.

“At Empty Bowls in 2012, we donated about $1,700,” said Mary Gilbert, IMS art teacher and an organizer for the event. “It was exciting to look up and see so many of our friends in the community gathered for a common cause.”

The main objectives of the Empty Bowls Project are to raise as much money as possible to feed the world’s hungry people and to nurture the creative process through the arts, a new solution to an old problem.
