June 2014 National Safety Month

The National Safety Council has adopted June, 2014 as National Safety Month. Nevada County will support a county-wide campaign, promoting “Safety: It Takes All of Us.” Its objective is to bring attention to key safety issues in the workplace. “Safety: It Takes All of Us” was inspired by the idea of continuous risk reduction – a key pillar in the journey to safety excellence.

The month long event will be hosted by the Nevada County Safety Committee (each department is represented by an appointed safety officer). Each week is dedicated to a different topic emphasizing safe practices.

Week one will focus our attention on Preventing Prescription Drug Abuse (June 2-6). Week two will direct our attention on Be Aware of Your Surroundings (June 9-13). Week three’s focus will be Put an End to Distraction (June 16-20). Week four will conclude the event with Summer Safety (June 23-27).

The power of safety lies within each of us to actively practice safe work habits, identify hazards early and removing them or controlling them before harm is done. This is the key to the journey to safety excellence.

Sierra Agape Center to take insurance

Sierra Agape Center has offered psychotherapy, meditation training, yoga therapy and massage therapy on a donation or sliding fee basis since May of 2010. In 2014, the implementation of the Affordable Care Act made it possible for many to obtain insurance coverage for mental health therapy. Grant funding for mental health services has diminished and has become more focused on prevention and wellness — a positive change but almost impossible for a small nonprofit in a rural area to be competitive enough to receive mental health services funding.

Therefore, Kimball C. Pier, Ph.D., LMFT, founder and primary provider of psychotherapy is now accepting all Anthem Blue Cross insurance plans and will bill other insurance companies for clients seeking psychotherapy services. For clients who do not have insurance or who have a high deductible, a sliding fee scale beginning at $40 per session is available. For clients without resources, Dr. Pier offers two sessions at no cost or whatever rate is affordable.

The yoga classes are taught by some of Tahoe’s most esteemed instructors and will take place on First Street in The Village at 5 p.m. This is the second summer of Yoga Squaw’d, which is hosted by Squaw’s Wanderlust Yoga Studio.

“The free Yoga Squaw’d classes are the perfect way for the community to come together and collectively enjoy the beautiful outdoors while also improving their individual wellness,” said Jamie Ebert, manager of the Wanderlust Yoga Studio.

California Family Health Council Title X Audit of Public Health

Last week, evaluators from the California Family Health Council visited the Nevada County Public Health Department to audit the Title X (family planning clinic) program in Truckee. They examined clinical, fiscal, and administrative processes and procedures. During the exit interview all three auditors stated they had no corrective findings in any area, a situation they said they had never encountered before.

Additionally, the auditors were highly complimentary of the outstanding work done in the Truckee clinic. They highlighted several areas of excellence, stating Nevada County’s work can serve as a role model for other clinics. They were particularly impressed with the clinic’s privacy and confidentiality policies and processes, electronic health records, warm hand-offs for behavioral health and other referrals, focus on reproductive health across the life span, and services to adolescents.

The dedicated staff who work in the clinic and program deserve recognition for their hard work and accomplishments in providing essential services in the Truckee community.
